Pedal Cleats

A cycling or pedal cleat is a small piece of a triangular plastic or metal wedge attached to the sole of a rider’s shoe. It has a spring mechanism that allows you to clip your feet in and out of your pedals with ease.

Additionally, the pedals have a mechanism that is specifically designed to connect with corresponding shoe cleats just like ski boots. This enables your feet to lock firmly in place. Compare the top brands here at Velomio!

Types of Pedal Cleats

While different manufacturers supply different shoes and clip-less pedals, they mainly fall into two categories – off-road systems and road systems. You will find both of these at Velomio.

While there is a limited number of cycling shoes that can take the road or off-road cleats, most of them are designed to fit into only one of the systems. Therefore, it is important to choose the right type of cleats that suits your needs. For instance, road cycling will not require as much unclipping as off-road cycling.

Off-Road System Cleats

These systems are typically used for off-road cycling. It consists of a small metal cleat that is attached with two bolts. This means you have to get commuter style or mountain bike shoes that have the corresponding fastening style. This system is popular with riders since the cleats are sunken into the sole of the shoes.

Road System Cleats

This system is made of large plastic cleats attached with three bolts. They are not suitable for walking because the cleats stick out from the sole of the shoe. This makes it nearly impossible to walk especially on slippery surfaces.
Additionally, their pedal system is single-sided. This means you have to find the right side to click in before you start riding.

Factors to Consider

When shopping for the perfect cleats for cycling shoes, here are a few things to consider:

  • The Float – In cycling, float refers to the amount of lateral movement that is allowed before releasing your foot from the pedal. It can be free or spring-loaded with a range of zero to nine degrees.
  • Tension – This refers to the ease with which you clip in or out of the pedals.
  • Efficiency – Are they able to make cycling more efficient, hold your feet in the right place, or prevent your feet from slipping off the pedals?

Here at Velomio, we have a collection of some ideal pedal cleats for you to compare. Do not hesitate to take a look around.
